We are excited to announce that we have signed an agreement with author Mikko Rauhala to publish his short story, “The Paperclip War”, as a standalone story in our Dragon Gems short fiction program, and his debut collection of stories, Flashes In Time.
Mikko Rauhala is a bilingual Finnish speculative fiction author. Informed by both his master’s degree in intelligent systems and a transhumanist background, he’s most at home in hard science fiction settings, though he’s not exclusive and likes to cross genres. Whether the subject is steam-powered gnomes or universal quantum suicide, Rauhala enjoys taking an eccentric premise and bringing it to its logical conclusion. As befits a Finn, his plot-driven narrative is often seasoned with a touch of dark, dry humor.
In Finnish, Rauhala’s short fiction has been nominated for the national Atorox award; the story is published in English as “The Guardian of Kobayashi” (Never Stop, Finnish science fiction and fantasy stories, Osuuskumma, 2017). Some of Rauhala’s other English credits include co‑authoring the Infinite Metropolis collection (Aurelia Leo, 2020) and “Rekindled” in Best Vegan SFF of 2020 (Metaphorosis, 2021).
“The Paperclip War” was published in February 2024. Flashes In Time is currently scheduled for publication in July 2024.
